The Passo dello Stelvio is the highest paved pass in the Eastern Alps at 2,757 metres and the most photographed stack of hairpins in Europe. The eastern climb from Prato allo Stelvio delivers 48 numbered switchbacks; the western side from Bormio is longer, darker and cut through a series of rough tunnels.

Riding it
Numbered hairpins make the eastern side easy to pace but hard to rush: the corners are tight, off-camber at the apex and stacked so closely that a bike never gets a straight to settle on. The Bormio side is the more interesting ride and the more demanding one — unlit tunnels, dripping rock walls and a surface that stays damp in shadow well into the afternoon. Expect cyclists in numbers all summer and near-freezing air at the top even in August.
