The Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs 48 kilometres from Bruck in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, crossing the Hochtor at 2,504 metres beneath Austria's highest peak. It is a toll road built for the view, with 36 hairpins, several side spurs and a surface maintained to a standard no free pass can match.

Riding it
The toll buys an exceptional road: consistent width, predictable camber and barriers where they matter, which makes it one of the few high passes where a rider can settle into a rhythm. The Edelweissspitze spur climbs higher still, on cobbles — worth doing, worth slowing for. Opening hours are enforced and the road closes overnight; the season normally runs from early May to early November. Motorcycle tolls are cheaper than car tolls, and a two-day ticket costs little more than a single day.
