Sa Calobra is a dead end: twelve kilometres down from the Coll dels Reis to a cove on Mallorca's north coast, then twelve kilometres back up the way you came. Antonio Parietti designed it in the 1930s to follow the terrain rather than fight it, which is how it ended up with 26 hairpins and the Nus de sa Corbata — a 270-degree loop where the road ties itself in a knot and passes under its own bridge.

Riding it
Because there is no through route, everything that goes down has to come back up, and the road is narrow enough that meeting a coach on a blind hairpin is a genuine event. It is open all year, which in practice means winter is the best time to ride it: Mallorca fills with cycling teams in spring and with tourist traffic all summer. Early morning is the only reliable window. The gradients are steady, the surface is good, and the tie-knot bend is much easier to ride than it looks in photographs.
