The SS163 Amalfitana traces 50 kilometres of cliff between Vietri sul Mare and Positano, cut into the rock above the Tyrrhenian and threaded through Amalfi, Ravello and Praiano. It is not a mountain pass and not a fast road; it is a balcony, and the reason to ride it is the view and the villages rather than the corners.

Riding it
The road is narrow, walled on one side and open to the drop on the other, with blind bends where two buses cannot pass and regularly try to. A motorcycle is by some margin the best way to see it — filtering past stationary traffic is normal and expected — but this is a ride to take slowly and defensively. Summer is gridlocked and some sections run alternating one-way traffic in peak season; spring and autumn are far better. Parking in the villages is scarce and expensive, and a bike solves that too.
