Transalpina — DN67C — is Romania's highest road, running 148 kilometres along the crest of the Parâng Mountains between Novaci and Sebeș and cresting at the Urdele Pass at 2,145 metres. Where the Transfăgărășan is a stack of walled hairpins, Transalpina is open, exposed ridge riding with long sightlines and very little shelter.

Riding it
The surface is good for most of its length, but the exposed crest collects crosswinds that can move a loaded bike, and the weather changes fast above 1,800 metres — clear sky at Rânca says nothing about Urdele twenty minutes later. Sheep flocks on the road are routine rather than exceptional through the summer. The southern half from Novaci is the more scenic and the more heavily patrolled; the northern descent towards Sebeș is faster and emptier.
